Forum… Or Against ‘em

Word comes this week that shortly, Playboy Magazine will no longer feature photos of naked women. It has been something like three decades since I have atually read, er I mean looked at, a Playboy and roughly five decades since I actually purchased one. Still, it comes as something of a shock that there will no longer be pictures of naked women in future editions. It is kind of like removing Gilgamesh from the Epic of Gilgamesh or the exalted prince who feared Marduk out of the Code of Hammurabi, or Moses from the Old Testament or Jesus from the New Testament or Mohammed from the Koran or the Angel Moroni from the Book of Mormon or the God King from the Golden Bough. I watched the Democratic debate the other night, a rarity for me as I do not want to beleaguer my Republican soul with such mundanities. What Barry Sanders said started me thinking. He enunciated, if you will, a politics of entitlement. The thing is, entitlement is too much with us, each of us, all of us. The have nots are entitled to a handout, or what they might call a hand up, welfare, charity, the advantage of disadvantage. Those striving to better themselves are entitled to their ambition and drive. The self made among us are entitled to what they have earned for themselves. Rich people, such as myself, are entitled to our advantage, what it is we have inherited from our ancestors and we are entitled to pass on, at our choosing, the very same advantage we possess to those to whom we are inclined to see as the stewards of the advantage to which we are entitled…
